Which posts should I report?

Can I help the staff by telling that member which rules were broken, instead of reporting?

You are helping by making a report.

Please do not make comments towards the member who has violated the rules, pointing out their violations.
Such comments never help and just incite further forum disruption.

How do I report?

Simply click the" Report to moderator" link at the bottom-right corner of the message you wish to report.

If the comment is breaking the forum rules, why do I have to report it, shouldn’t the moderators see it and act?

The forum moderators are not reading all the posts in all the threads, there is a chance that we might miss something.
By reporting, you might be helping to diffuse things before they get out of hand or prevent a thread from being locked.

What should I write in the report comment?

Give us a short explanation why are you reporting this post.
There is no need to quote the forum rules (we know them) or tell us what action should we take.

I reported a post, but, no action was taken – why?

First of all, the moderators review every single report that is made.

Second, not every report warrants action and not every moderator action is seen by the reporter.
It is also possible that no action will be taken at all, after due deliberation.

I have a serious beef with another member over an issue and he/she keeps hinting at it in various posts, should I report?

Generally, we would not be aware of personal issues between members, unless we see a report with an explanation to it.
Even then, personal issues are to be taken to PMs between the two parties.
The forum staff will avoid intervening in personal affairs or taking sides in most cases, unless forum rules have been broken.

This has but one exception – which is harassment.
If a member reports continuous harassment through posting by another member, with a clear explanation – then action might be taken as per forum rules:  http://starsidergalaxy.com/forum/index.php?topic=21853.0
